Gazi dar-Ghudza

Like his compatriots, Gazi arrived on the continent close to ten years ago. For being so few in number, the Tal’Vashoth of Jinan are larger than life. Numbering fewer than a hundred, many Jinani can recite them by name. Fame is relative however, and only the most meticulous remember Gazi.

Rumors had persisted in certain circles for some time that a previously uncharted landmass existed to the West, rumors the Antaam were determined to investigate once circumstances permitted. After the near-disaster that was the beresaad’s investigation of the Blight in Ferelden - salvaged via the intervention of a bas no less - the Arishok decided that a more significant detachment would be required to provide local support for long-distance reconnaissance assignments in the future, and a fully-crewed warship was tasked in this role. In addition to the beresaad, sailors and marines would remain on extended station, and the entire mission was placed under a unified command. As far as plans go it was successful, their ship was the first from known Thedas to arrive at and make contact with Jinan.

The particulars of the journey are obscure, the Tal’Vashoth aren’t particularly open about it, but some details are commonly known: Their merevan - the captain - died at some point on the voyage, and the trip took significantly longer than they had prepared for. What precisely happened on the mission remains shrouded in mystery, but what resulted is no secret, the Qunari were absorbed into Jinani society within a year of contact. Without a single exception, every kossith that survived the journey now currently serves a Jinani House. Equally without exception, every Jinani Tal’Vashoth is seen as exemplary in their role.

“It’s fascinating to me, personally.” Jahir continued, breathlessly, “These aliens seem to be a better fit for our institutions than our own people. A decade ago no-one could even imagine a kossith.”

Given the nature of the society the Tal’Vashoth come from, they tend to exhibit many of the same personality traits. One of these is the pattern of names they have chosen for themselves upon entering Jinani society. Reflecting Qunari traditions, the names refer to their task or occupation.

“I am called Gazi, the Jinani word for warrior, because I have chosen to fight for my House,” he explains.

House Ghudza is, as a matter of fact, the reason for Gazi’s relative obscurity. Itself known only to those with whom they have personal dealings, dar-Ghudza are masters of the town of Khaziza. An isolated agriculture and farming community, in the north of Jinan on the far side of the Nujava Desert from anything else of note, Khaziza is on its own. With the bulk of Tal’Vashoth working and residing in one of the major cities, such as Zhagi or Chisa, the subject of his solitary presence on the frontier is an obscure but not uncommon topic of discussion among those who oft consider such things, though no answers are forthcoming from Gazi. Despite his silence, the small size of the community has meant that within it he is even less anonymous than any other Tal’Vashoth on the continent, and many observations as to his personality quirks - those he brought with them, and others he seems to be developing - are made on a regular basis.

Unusual for a Jinani, let alone a Qunari, Gazi keeps an extensive amount of personal possessions. Their significance is known to only him, but to facilitate his gathering, the masters of dar-Ghudza have seen fit to provide him with the largest quarters of anyone in the community. This could be an insight into his reasons for being in Khaziza in the first place, an acknowledgement of his relative size, or a simply a matter of practicality since his collection is perpetually growing. He seems to view the traditional weapons of Jinan - a sword and walking stick - as decorative toys, preferring his spear. Though when circumstances have forced the issue, he has displayed remarkable if reluctant skill with them. Finally and perhaps most significantly, Gazi has proven uniquely adept at assimilating Jinani language, beyond “simply” incorporating idioms and esoteric terms into regular use, he has been known to drop non-sequitur observations about linguistic peculiarities into unrelated conversations.

It’s a reoccurring problem in the series. Both ME2 and ME3 assumed Shep was close to Liara regardless of the way they treated her in ME. There’s no option for femme!Shep to express disgust at Vega’s sexism despite her ability to do so to Harkin in ME. Too often decisions are made about Shepard’s relationship with his/her crew that potentially contradict past behavior.

Unlike those other examples however, I don’t get the impression Thanemancers are asking for additional options that reflect non-romanced Thane Shepards, they want more Thane in the story, more Thane romance… and I feel like there was already far too much of both hoisted upon me in ME3 as it is.

In ME3 replays I just don’t talk to him, and Kirrahe gets to star.

Yeah I don’t begrudge Thanemancers wanting more Thane, but I think the bigger problem is non-Thanemancers getting too much Thane content. I was worried I had a bug that would break my other romance the first time I got that “he was praying for you” stuff from Kolyat. I didn’t play a Shepard who hated the guy or anything, but it definitely felt like Thane and FemShep’s friendly/professional relationship in ME3 was a lot deeper than the one I’d played in ME2.

I’d just like to point out that for all the whining Sherlock fans do because Elementary is “degaying” Sherlock they sure didn’t seem to give a shit when Irene Adler, a lesbian character, was made to fall in love with Sherlock. It’s not like shit like that is 90% of representation lesbians get in shows/movies/books, right?

Irene Adler is not canonically lesbian any more than Holmes and Watson are canonically gay for each other.

She’s a canon “completely outwits Sherlock and he’s impressed” person. This led Holmes to re-appraise his former tendency towards misogyny. Which is what Sherlock changed by having him figure it all out at the last minute.

This did, in fact, annoy me. There were a quite a few things wrong with Adler, namely that she flustered a suddenly repressed-and-not-asexual Holmes with her sexuality, not her intellect.

However, the notion that a woman can be smart and capable might have been surprising to Holmes in the 19th century, but a story like that would not have had the same effect in the 21st. Misogyny was more typical back then, now it would made Holmes look like an extremely ignorant backward asshole to possess such views. It’d be totally different characterization, in the former it’s learning to overcome stereotypes, in the latter it’s stubborn prejudice in the face of overwhelming contradictory evidence - which would be out of character for Holmes. Something did have to be changed and they ended up with at least a compelling dynamic for the character.

In any case, the bickering back and forth between these fandoms is silly. Your preferred show still exists, the other isn’t replacing it. That won’t change my overall opinion but seriously people.

Yeah I was wondering how I’d missed something like Irene Adler being a lesbian. OP is joking maybe…?

EDIT: Ah, in the BBC show. Not in the original work. You really can’t get mad that a non-canon interpretation isn’t carried over into other interpretations, OP, as cool to see as it would be.
